TORNADOES!

Tornadoes have been in the news lately with the series of large and destructive storms that have visited the Mid-West and South. We were under a tornado watch last Wednesday when the big cold front came across a huge chunk of the country.

A primer on the different kinds of twisters:

Rope tornado

Cone tornado

Wedge tornado

Multi-vortex tornado

The tornadoes above are all associated with supercell thunderstorms. Other whirlwind events are not and often are short-lived and much less destructive.

Waterspouts

Landspout
Dust devil
