FIVE SECOND STORIES

Released on this day 50 years ago! Cover by Hipgnosis. My fav tracks: "Us and Them" and "Time":

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

Home, home again.
I like to be here when I can.
And when I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire.
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

When C was recovering from a nasty Norovirus stomach bug, Buddy stretched over her tummy and purred. She felt better as a result and we came up with a silly idea of feline purring therapy. The cats would have to be uber mellow and enjoy human contact. C realized that this paralleled something from the Margaret Atwood novel Oryx and Crake. Crakes are genetically engineered hybrid animals and the women have a curious feature: they gather around a hurt individual and purr. The purring was bred into them by their maker Crake, who made them able to purr at the same frequency as the ultrasound technology that was used to heal wounds and broken bones.

In 1970, Led Zeppelin in order to play a single date in Denmark, changed their name to The Nobs. This came as a result of an on-going battle and threats of lawsuit by a member of the Von Zeppelin family over the band making money while using the family name and imagery of the Hindenburg tragedy. It was a generational thing as well-the family did not appreciate the band's awful, screechy racket. The band was in mid-tour and not wishing to cancel, they changed their name in order to continue. It turned out the change was for only one venue and their management and the Von Zeppelin family were able to work out an agreement.

Using the word "nobs" was both cheeky and insulting: "nob" is an old derogatory slang for the aristocracy-"nob" being short for nobility and later "nob" became slang for the head of a penis. Those naughty lads!
