The Great Pyramid

For centuries it was assumed that the Great Pyramid of Giza had four sides. However, in 1940, a RAF survey plane took photographs of the pyramid that showed that there were eight.

What was eventually figured out was that the four sides were made up of two slightly concave sections. This could only be seen from the air and only during equinoxes would the shadow play reveal these additional sections. The RAF flight happened to take place on the Spring Equinox.
