March 1 was the meteorological Spring which is based on annual temperature cycle and used for record keeping. The astronomical first day of Spring–the Equinox–will arrive this year on March 19. The date varies from year to year depending on the day when the Sun’s highest point is over the equator before heading into the Northern Hemisphere.
The following day was beautiful, partly sunny with light breeze and temps in the 50's.
As I have mentioned in an earlier post, we are heading into egg-making season for our Avian neighbors. They rented out the Diner for a bash-folks are sassy and full of energy so why not have good eats, partake the waters and hang out on a lovely early Spring afternoon.
The first to arrive was a Jay so I tossed out peanuts for him. To my surprise, he was soon joined by two more. Is this the trio who were here last Autumn? Soon, the joint was hopping with folks flying in from the birch, back 40 shrubs and pool deck railing. Pretty much everyone who is anyone in featherworld made an appearance-having a bite and a chat. Catching up on how the Winter went. In the background, the neighborhood was filled with birdcall: the chirpys, the low-level raucous caucus chatter, punctuated by loud calls from the RWs, Cardinals and starlings.
The bird bath was a hit with folks both drinking and bathing. Many thanks to C for maintaining it.
DHS was inside with me having been asked to come in for a meal around the starting time of the party. It certainly says a lot about his Lordship to do so. It's very much appreciated.
The squirrels didn't crash the party either. Their only appearance was Stubbs and Freddie passing through chasing each other, heading West following a wide shaft of sunlit lawn.
Mgt. decided to add a few special selections on the juke box, a contribution by us for the occasion.
These were among the selections that I was listening to with Bud in front of the fire and watching the goings on.
Of course, what's a gathering without a male kerfuffle? Especially near-egg making time. All that energy! Well, it looks like last Autumn's squabble between Big Woody and one of the Jays is still ongoing. A couple of close calls at the feeder and on the ground. Oy.
Fellows, do you kiss your mama with that beak? C'mon now. |
Some folks have already begun the ritual. Sparrows for years have occupied the purple martin house that Benny's put up. Neither Benny or I can recall having seen martins in the neighborhood. I think he hoped to attract them. At least someone is using the apartments. It appears that there is a full house already.
After a couple of hours, things wound down and the Diner was back to being open to the public. Regulars at this hour came early for the party and are continuing to eat. The squirrels are back.
A lovely day.
