The other night, C and I were wondering just what instrument in Indian music was responsible for the background drone. It is the Tanpura as explained by this vid. I remarked about how the drone reminded me of insect sounds during Summer evenings. C replied that this was an interesting example of how environmental sounds make their way into a culture's creative expressions.
