THE TALENTED MR. PUFFER FISH

Puffer fish live primarily in the tropics. They go by many names notably blowfish (hello Hootie!) which refer to its ability to puff up in response to predator threat.

You've made a very bad mistake, Senór.
Many varieties are toxic sometimes it is their skin, spines or flesh. In Japan, China and Korea, eating puffer fish is a delicacy, prepared specially trained chefs who know which species and which part is safe to eat.

A truly unique aspect of puffer fish is their mating ritual. In order to attract a mate, males will create elaborate patterns in the sea bottom. Mr. Puffer Fish is only 5" long but his mandalas often reach 7 feet wide!

Mr. Puffer can be seen in the central circle.
First documented by Japanese divers in 1995, these patterns are created by his fins working up the fine sand and he will pick up shells and bits of coral to adorn the ridges. He will work tirelessly 24/7 for a week to complete for potential mates to view before wiped away by ocean currents.

Success! A willing female enters the center of the mandala and the male will gently give her a love bite as mating proceeds.

Well done, sir!
