Old Indigenous legend: if you can see the dead man walking in the storm, people are going to die. What is seen are smaller whirlwinds called suction vortices that rotate around the main funnel. They often contain intense, localized winds that can be in excess of 100 mph compared to the tornado circulation. It was such vortices in the infamous 2017 El Reno, OK tornado that killed several storm chasers including Tim Samaras, a well-known field researcher and scientist.
