CIVIL DEFENSE SIREN
Where I live the civil defense sirens are tested the first Saturday of each month at 1pm. Often I am out and about when this occurs. Something I've noticed about human nature is that when it happens, people usually comment. Often, it comes in the form of an audible yet to oneself murmur such as "Oh, it's Saturday, that's right". I hear a scattering of these if I am in the check-out line. One day the cashier murmured and I replied "I can see you're from here" and he replied "yep". What is unspoken is the following mental process: Siren goes off, hmm, sky is clear so it's not a tornado; bombs aren't dropping, oh, it's first Saturday. A inner sigh of relief.
