FIVE SECOND STORIES

2/13-RW is back! I thought I heard him last week off in the swamp to the East but couldn't confirm. This morning I was in East Lansing, fueling at Costco, when I heard his call. Driving away, I saw one perched on a small tree. Past couple of years, I noted, that first contact was in early March so the weird weather trend continues.

The stampies are up. I've seen their idiosyncratic, golf ball-sized dig marks for the past couple of weeks but no sightings. In the past couple of days, I have caught their scent while driving around town. With all the cannabis being smoked in cars these days 🙀, it's hard to distinguish sometimes. Skunk scent, I find, has a deeper finishing tone.

Yesterday at the Diner:

Mr. Redbird looking quite flashy in the afternoon sun

Stubbs and Freddie hung out feeding for some time-I was lucky enough to catch them in the same pose, pointing in the same direction!

2/19-20: Lovely sunny weather, near 50°. Buddy, on duty, basked on the front porch, out of the wind:

Glorious sundown on the 19th.

2/21-61°, sunny and the crocus are blooming!
Last year, they started blooming on 2/18, in 2021, it was around the traditional time here-around St. Patty's Day in mid-March. Two years in a row in mid-late February—is this the beginning of a trend?

It feels like early Spring. All the snow is gone except for parking lot piles that lie in the shade. Buddy is enjoying the more temperate temperatures and stays out for several hours at a time especially in the afternoon.
His Lordship returns from patrol. It's suppertime and we're gathering by the hearth.

 Seen while out and about:

That's right, you can be super happy getting your mouth minty fresh with some Bob Ross merch! I was curious to see how much junk his estate and business partners were hawking and found that Amazon had pages and pages of the stuff. No collection would be complete without this gem:

Autograph model no less!

C was reading Bart Ehrman's Heaven and Hell: A History of the Afterlife. Her interesting takeaway was that the level of collective trauma inflicted on a tribe will determine their view of the afterlife.

The Dabous Giraffe.

In the heart of the Sahara lies the Tenere Desert in the nation of Niger. On a sandstone outcrop, the largest known animal petroglyph is carved depicting two giraffes, most likely a male and a female. It is 20 feet in height and is not the only carving. From Wiki:

In the surroundings, 828 images have been found engraved on the rocks, of which 704 are animals (cattle, giraffes, ostriches, antelopes, lions, rhinoceros, and camels), 61 are human, and 17 are inscriptions in the Tifinagh language.  The carvings are believed to have been done between 6,000 and 8,000 years ago, during the African humid period, when the region was less arid, and the Sahara was a vast savannah.

I watched Amelie for the first time in quite a while—I had forgotten most of it. I'd recommend it as a pleasant, hopeful tonic to what we are experiencing these days.

A favorite scene: Amelie enters the subway and as she goes down the steps, she hears the old song "If You Weren't There" sung by Fréhel sounding to many like Edith Piaf. She discovers that the music comes from an old blind man sitting on a bench with a record player on his lap. The curved ceiling of the subway creates a nice dimension to the sound, like that in a dance hall. I thought: the man had his sight then and saw her sing many times. He plays it for change and a daily reminder of one of the most sublime moments of his life.

Amelie puts a few coins in his cup and looking up, she sees for the first time, her beloved only a few steps away.

"How could I live, if you weren't there".

I've really noticed an increase of bad driving on I-496 in recent months. I remembered a PSA from my childhood warning about "the migratory weaver bird" which I found amusing. I have not been able to find it anywhere on YT and evidently, a similar ad existed in Britain during the same time period.Their version (and maybe ours as well) had a little ditty: the weaver bird has little brain, it weaves about from lane to lane...

What is depicted above is a common occurrence: you're in the right lane and some bastard roars up on the left to pass in front of you to take the fucking exit. It seems that to slow down a bit in the right lane behind me in order to exit is emasculating for these people. Add in immaturity, thrill-seeking and a belief of personal immortality—don't I sound like an old boy? At least  I'm not yelling at clouds...yet.

DINER KERFUFFLE

Late one afternoon, Stubbs was having a bite of sunflower seeds at the Diner. It had been a chilly day with snow still on the ground but thankfully the wind remained calm. It was the slow hour, with just him and Senor Junco, who always sat in a booth near the front. The door flung open and Stubbs groaned as a blur of brown and white came zipping up to the buffet. It was a Nutkin, one of his obnoxious cousins with an big attitude and chip on his shoulder because of his small size. Stubbs shifted to face away and kept eating. Suddenly, the blur flew up the aisle, stopping at his booth and rapidly began to ask questions, one of their most annoying habits:

hey, that looks pretty good, yeah they do a good job in this joint with the grub although, have you been over to the pines? Real good there, too. Did you see the sun today? It was bright, wasn't it? Boy this snow is cold! And what is up with those crows, they give me the willies, how 'bout you? Hey, you gonna finish that?

Nutkin started to reach for the seed right under Stubb's nose.

Motherfucker growled Stubbs, in a low voice that somehow mesmerized Nutkin. Everyone is cold, their feet are wet and we spend all our waking hours trying to find enough grub to stay alive...

Nutkin came to and interrupted: yeah man, I feel ya, yeah, it sucks doesn't it? Hey, you gonna finish that?

The Junco, sensing danger, tossed down what he owed and flew out of the Diner.

Stubbs stepped out into the aisle and glared at Nutkin replying: what we don't need is your brand of bullshit and in a flash, lunged for the Nutkin's neck. Nutkin, being super quick, which is their nature, was about a half a step ahead of the attack and sprinted out of the Diner towards the shrubs in the Back 40.

Stubbs settled back into his eating pose, picked up a seed and ruminated. He was tired and cold. He didn't like to lose his temper especially in the Diner. He liked the neighborhood and the place was convenient. The door opened and Stubbs's pal Redbird flew in and settled into a booth. Stubbs lifted his chin and RB lifted his wing in response.

Man, heard you had a beef with a Nutkin said RB. You know how they are replied Stubbs. I 'spose it's all over the neighborhood already. RB finished swallowing and said well, you know how they are. Stubbs snorted and changed the subject. How's the wife? he asked. Fabulous RB replied, she'll be by in a bit. Stubbs: I've been hearing you at dawn these days, high up. Getting close to egg time? RB grinned, fluttering his wings and said: you betcha!  Wifey has been extra attentive. That's why I'm up there hollering. Gotta work off some steam. Stubbs chuckled. The door opened and a dove waddled in. Stubbs smiled for he loved their cooing which always made him feel better. He decided on that note, it was time to head for home. On his way out, he tapped RB on his shoulder to say cya later and walked out the door.

FIVE SECOND STORIES

We weren't exaggerating about the dark January: according to the local paper, the sun was out so seldom it tied for the second darkest first month of the year in the last 100 years. Ayup.

2/8-9: 60°! Crazy weather continues. It is confusing many:

The daffs are up!

2/8: WI recorded its first February tornado on record. It touched down in Evansville, a town of 6,500 located between the IL border and Madison.

From www.you can't make this stuff up.com:

-In the NV Republican primary, Nikki Haley and "none of these candidates" were the only two choices on the ballot. She lost in a landslide. Trump is being anointed by the NV Republican caucus.

-Department of Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas was saved from impeachment when TX Dem Al Green was wheeled in by Democratic colleagues from the hospital, shoeless and wearing scrubs, to cast the deciding vote.

The CALL SAM Bernstein Law Firm has been around for 50 years as personal injury specialists, a polite euphemism for ambulance chasers. In one of their latest ads, the next generation with Mark Bernstein as their spokesman, gives his spiel in rhyming verse!

Trust me, I say! Whoever hit grandma, will pay!*
*This is not an actual Bernstein rhyme, only one created as a demonstration, although admittedly satirical, as an attention-drawing device and not reflective of the attitude of the Bernstein Law Firm towards their valued clients or their situation.

Buddy continues to show us how smart he is in figuring out human behavior. Bud and I were sitting together on the couch surfing YT when my cell phone, sitting over on the desk, rang. He has learned that when he hears this sound, Dad will move, so he immediately jumped off the couch.

1951 pulp that appealed to the anti-cannabis, anti-jazz, anti-Negro, anti-free sex, anti-kicks in general moral crusaders. From the back cover:

Joyce Taylor was a nice high school girl, maybe a little wild, and when she is kicked out of school for doing a bump-and-grind number on a cafeteria table she moves to the big city and gets a job. There she meets a man who introduces her to the smoky world of jazz and before she knows it, she's inhaled some of that sweet, sweet smoke. When the cops get in on the action the misery starts and Joyce finds herself on a roller coaster ride to oblivion. N.R. de Mexico wrote as if he knew his subject, yet refrained from getting as preachy about dope as many of his contemporaries did. The pot-smoking jazz scene of the 50s is well described and filled with smart, sympathetic people.

Despite such warnings, what does this crusade lead to? The counter-culture of Beatniks then Hippies. The battle still rages on.

In a similar nostalgic vein, I was wondering if the Soap Box Derby still existed? I never was interested but it seemed to be a piece of Americana and have not heard any mention of it since I was a kid. Well, it is now known as the International Soap Box Derby seemingly still going strong since 1934.

Ludwig Hohlwein 1874-1949, German Poster Artist. As a printmaker, I admired his graphic style.

From Wiki:

Holhwein was a pioneer in Plakatstil (German for "poster style"), also known as Sachplakat, was an early style of poster art that originated in Germany in the 1900s. It was started by Lucian Bernhard of Berlin in 1906. The common characteristics of this style are bold eye-catching lettering with flat colors. Shapes and objects are simplified, and the composition focuses on a central object. Plakatstil turned away from the complexity of Art Nouveau and propagated a more modern outlook on poster art.

Holhwein was also an ardent Nationalist, working for the government during both World Wars.

Sly and the Family Stone "Stand) from 1969. Still timely!

StandIn the end you'll still be youOne that's done all the things you set out to do
StandThere's a cross for you to bearThings to go through if you're going anywhere (ooh)

Curious vid concerning the Book of Enoch, an ancient Hebrew apocalyptic religious text, ascribed by tradition to the patriach Enock who was the father of Methuselah and the great-grandfather of Noah. The earliest section is believed to date to 300-200 BCE and while accepted in the canon of the earliest Christian churches and still is by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (see 12/31/23 post Church Forests), it is not by the majority of Jewish or Christian church bodies.

This piece is a weird amalgam of cheesy graphics, heavy X-File material regarding alien abductions, a alien/human hybrid project that created a race of giants, cherry-picked facts of world-wide ancient tales about visitors who arrived from different star systems and taught humans stuff that fit into this particular narrative: speculation of alien involvement in human civilization creating a 2001 monolith moments where Shazam!-humans make giant leaps forward, figuring out, for example, both the wheel and algebra.

It is a rather radical manifesto: we need to offend the worldview status-quo dictated to us from Church and State in order for us to widen our concept of the human species and the universe. The host also takes a strong advocacy for abductees and returnees, opining that they should be valued and listened to.  Hmm, our neo-prophets?

I do agree, however, that there has been a lack explanation by the "experts" concerning something that has fascinated me for some time: there was some kind of worldwide giant leap that created calendars out of stone circles, pyramids, earthen mounds as humans transitioned from hunter-gatherers to agriculture. These were massive undertakings--not only the many years of communal labor but the amount of time to track celestial movements and translate this data into a giant calendar often with no written language! How did they do it?

Don't be a loser-feed your FOMO and buy your MUDMERCH for a mere $25, operators are standing by.

I recently came across an ad for this:  MUD\WTR, the anti-coffee morning drink for those who are "not mad, just disappointed" with coffee and most likely, the whole genre of heavily caffeinated drinks. It contains a wee bit of caffeine from the 100% organic cacao, ayurvedic herbs and functional mushrooms. No, not those 'shrooms, silly. Functional mushrooms are mushrooms with qualities some say go beyond their nutritional value such as natural health properties: brain-boosting, stress-reducing, immunity-fueling, mood-enhancing. This evidently is the newest craze--mushroom energy bars and mushroom lattés. Not surprisingly, the headquarters for this company is Venice, CA.

BEWARE OF THE POGONIP!

Stock photo from South Dakota

Yesterday morning, we had an uncommon weather event: freezing fog. Indigenous people called this Pogonip and warned that inhalation of the icy air could cause lung damage. I began noticing that the tops of trees along I-496 were frosted, while in other areas, the frosting went all the way to the ground. Other places were untouched. The event continued until nearly noon when the temps rose above freezing and all the frosting melted.

IMBOLC

Early February historically hosts a number of holidays: very old Celtic festival Imbolc, marking the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox and for the optimists, the beginning of spring as well as association with lambing and the pre-Christian goddess Brigid.

St. Brigid's Cross, traditionally displayed over the door of a house to ward off evil.
The Christian Feast day of Saint Brigid is celebrated at this time-Brigid is Ireland's patroness saint who represented the light half of the year and the power that will bring people from the dark season of winter into spring.

Candlemas, February 2 is also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Feast of the Holy Encounter, is a feast day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Worshippers bring their  candles to mass where there is a blessing and procession of candles, symbolizing that Jesus is indeed the "light of the world".

Yesterday, Mr. Birch celebrated by basking in the late afternoon sun.

A INTER-SPECIES LOVE STORY

Walnut, a white-naped crane who resided at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC has died at age 42. Her story is both curious and sweet for she bonded with one of her human zookeepers, Chris Crowe and regarded him as a proxy mate for nearly 20 years.

Right out of Hollywood: Bird 'Bachelorette': A Rare Female Crane Who Chose a Man Named Crowe as Her Mate for Life.

Walnut, who is rumored to have killed two avian suitors who tried to mate with her in the past, had fallen in love with her Smithsonian zookeeper. Imagine this storyline in the human version of the show. Yikes!

HANGING WITH DR. Z

Fabulous 2022 gonzo parody of late night talk shows featuring Dr. Z, the orangutan elder statesman in the Planet of the Apes film interviewing famous guests. It has the feel of one of those old local public access channels with basic production values. Dr. Z's music director reminds me of Red Green's nephew Harold.

A VETERAN FIRE EATER SPEAKS

James Carville in fine form with worthy advice for the Democrats: be relentless and loud and keep the Roach as the centerpiece of any conversation about the election: do you really want this piece of shit to run the country?
